My guys...

This picture of my guys makes me smile. Krew was is SO HAPPY all the time. All you have to do is talk to him and he lights up. These three were just hanging out on the bed, after Spencer's "procedure"...I am sure he would be so glad to know I shared on the blog. Yes, Spence had to get a little snipperoo, per doctor's orders. (We were told ABSOLUTELY no more kids after the whole ICU stay...so Spence manned up and he was THRILLED ;) He actually did just fine and told me it was not near as bad as he imagined. I am just glad I didn't have to get my tubes tied...I am done with hospitals for a while!

Kam's first day of school...

Kam was SOOOO excited to start school again, I might have been a little excited too ;) He even made a cute little friend his first day. When I went to pick him up he says to me "Hey mom, can Lightning McQueen shirt play?" He had not learned the little boys name, but instead called him by his shirt. His teacher said they had immediately became pals and stuck together all day. It turns out he lives just down our street too.
Kam loves school and gets really mad if I have him miss it for some reason. Last week he had a yucky nose and sore throat and I didn't let him go...he was pissed. He was magically cured and felt great. Someday he will be doing the opposite just to get out of school...

Fun at Grandma Kim's

Kam has the best time at my mom's house. Someday I hope we have a big yard like hers for our boys to run like crazy. He loves to have someone watch him while he is jumping, so of course I took the opportunity to snap a few pics...

Love this face :)

A little update on Krew...

We went to the doc yesterday for a check up on Krew's development and I was worried about how it would go. Sometimes Krew is really strong, almost normal for his age, and other times he is just like a newborn. It seems like everytime we see the doctor he just flops around, but today he showed off pretty good. I was so glad to hear the doctor tell me that he thinks he has gotten so much stronger. Yay! Still not up to par, but tons better than he was at his two month. We went through a long check list of things that most 3 month old babies should do, and he could about 75% of them. The only things he couldn't do had to do with his neck and shoulders. He is getting there though :)

The doctor still wants us to see the neurologist, but he is thinking he might just tell us we don't need to do any testing and that he is fine. I am okay with this, because I would rather be safe than sorry. SO in the mean time, we keep working with him everyday to make him stronger.

The doctor mentioned another thing while we were there...he is concerned for Krew with the upcoming flu/RSV season. He says that with his low muscle tone, if he gets RSV or flu then he will have a harder time coughing and keeping infection from staying out of his lungs than other kids. So, he is trying to appeal to my insurance for Krew to get an immunization for RSV this year (he can get one dose of the flu vaccine but not until he is 6 months old-Dec). I guess insurance companies have very strict requirements that need to be met before they will authorize the shots (they cost $1000 each and he needs three of them), and Krew doesn't meet some of them, so he told us he is going to try as hard as he can to get him approved. He said that the shot will keep him out of ICU if he gets RSV, but not the hospital. WHAT?! I really hope he gets it to work, I left there feeling like Krew should just live in a bubble until May. I am a germ-a-phobe as it is. This is going to be an interesting winter!!!

Other than the warning for what we might be in for this flu season, it was a great appointment and I am SO HAPPY that Krew is improving so much!

Krew's hospital stay

When we took Krew in for his 2-month check up the doctor was a little concerned about his development. He is smiling and doing the social things he is supposed to, but his strength is not quite right. His little head is very floppy and you have to support it when you hold him, just like a newborn. Ugh. I guess I had forgotten what it was supposed to be like with a two-monther, I figured he was right on track.

SO we left the doctors office with an order to go to Utah Valley for some blood work. The thing that he has is called hypotonia, which essentially means, low muscle tone. Now we just have to figure out why he has this problem. It can be caused from about 25 different things, some of which are very scary. He can (and may) just grow out of it.

We went straight over to the hospital for the blood work. Poor little guy had just got his immunizations and was not super happy with us already...we really ticked him off when they needed enough blood for about 10 different tests. He was actually really brave and even the lab tech was impressed. So two more bandaids later, we headed home to wait for the results.
That night the doctor called to let us know that all of the tests came back negative. To be honest, I am not even sure what he was tested for. I guess that is something I should have paid attention to, but I think I was just in shock that something was wrong. So, the next step was an MRI to mark a few more things off the list of possibilities.

We went the following day to Utah Valley to get this done. We were not sure on a time so we got up and fed Krew, just in time for the pediatric sedation team to call and let me know that Krew has to fast for 6 hours before they can do it, because of the risk of him throwing up and choking on it while under. So because I had just fed him, we had to wait until 3 pm that afternoon and the only thing we could give him was pedialite up until one hour before the test. Poor kid.

So around 2:30, we headed over to the hospital. Luckily, Kam was already down at my mom's house so we didn't need to worry about what to do with him. We were planning on going to Fillmore for the weekend, so we were just going to get the test done, pick up Kam and be on our way... we were wrong.

We got to the hospital and they took us back to get him "prepped" for the MRI. He had to have an IV, and get hooked up to all of the monitors so they could make sure he didn't get too sleepy to breath, etc. The nurses were really good with him, but it was still pretty sad. They tried to stick his IV in his head to start with and the vein went bad, so they stuck it in his wrist. I was relieved, I am not sure I could have looked at him without crying if that was poking out of his little head. The nurse started asking me questions about Krew, one was if he was full term or not. When I told her that he was born at 36 weeks, she let us know that we would need to stay overnight, so he could continue to be monitored for 12 hours. Crap. This was turning into such a big yucky deal.

They got him all happy and loopy with the drugs in his IV and off they went. The MRI took about twenty minutes, then we headed up to the pediatric floor to settle in for the night. It was pretty convenient that we already had all of our stuff with us, we didn't even need to go get anything for our sleepover. Krew was so out of it when we got to the room. We had to work on getting him to wake up so he could eat, since it had been almost 9 hours by then. By about 8 pm that night he was finally being alert more and had more interest in eating.

Our doctor came by around 7pm to talk over the test results with us. It came back completely normal. I was not sure if I should be excited or worried. I asked the doctor and he told me I should be encouraged, because they have ruled out about half of the causes, and some of them were really bad things that can not be treated very easily. A tiny part of me wished that we had found an answer, because it is so hard putting him through all of these tests, especially if it turns out they were not necessary. There is a possibility that he is just slow, and it really is just a "catching up" problem. This, of course, is what we are hoping.

Krew was so good through his whole hospital stay. Spence and I tried to get some sleep, but it was almost impossible, with his machines going off every few minutes. I think I was having flashbacks of ICU, so every time his little oxygen indicator would freak out, I would jump up and rush over to him and make sure he was breathing. He was of course, it just kept moving on his teeny tiny foot. I was a basket of nerves all night and was relieved to get him home away from all the dang machine alarms.

Our next step is to see a neurologist. He will be able to tell if his problem is related to his brain, nerves, and muscles and how they all work together. Krew's doctor told us that in the meantime, we just need to work with him. He showed us some exercises to do with him every day along with lots of tummy time. It has been almost three weeks since all of this and I have seen some improvement. He is much more active with his arms and legs. He is totally pushing his feet to a standing position every chance he gets, but his little neck is still floppy. Not as bad as it was, but floppy. We are going in for a check up with the Krew's regular doctor on Monday the 21st, so I am hoping he has improved so much that the doctor just tells us everything was a big fat mistake and he is just fine. This, I am sure is not the case, but I can hope right?!

Check out all of the battle wounds...five bandaids and hardly any tears. He is so brave :) This was the day of his appointment, after the blood work.

Right after the MRI, he was OUT! We asked them if we could take some of that drug home to use on our four year old...

Finally awake and eating some sugar water. YUM :) Look at the teeny tiny blood pressure cuff.

Just chillin in his hospital crib. He was SO good.

A close up of his little IV.

Do you think he was a little bit happy to go home?!? Too cute!

Happy Birthday Poppy!!

I just wanted to wish my sweet Grandpa a very happy birthday! He is the BEST and I am not sure what we would do with out him! When I was a baby I started calling my Grandpa, "Poppy" (I really have no idea why, it is not even close) but the name stuck and all of his grandkids/great grandkids know him only by that. Poppy is a very special guy so I thought I would share a few things that I love about him:

He has been like a dad to me many times in my life. Poppy took me on my first daddy/daughter date. I remember him bringing me flowers and Josh crying because he wanted to go on a date too:) He has always called me his "baby girl", even to this day.

He is so smart and always willing to help anyone. Whenever I have something break all I have to do is call Poppy and if he can't help me fix it over the phone, he will come and do it himself. I am amazed at the stuff he knows.

He is pretty darn funny. He can always get you to laugh. He can tell you some pretty good stories about him growing up in Eureka. One of his best is the story of his birth, which starts off by telling you of the "three wise miners, bearing gifts..." He is always pretty full of it:)

He is a really great cook, according to Kam. Really, I am not quite sure how he would survive on his own. His best recipes include hot dogs, kipper snacks, or oysters. Yum.

When I was little he would always hide cookies and treats for me on his side of the bed , so when I came over I would know where to get them.

I could go on and on about Poppy. He is really the BEST and we love him so much. I am one lucky girl to have a Grandpa as special as he is. Happy Birthday Poppy, we hope you have a great day!

Toby Keith Concert

Kam LOVES Toby Keith. Spencer started to listen to him after going to Iraq (Toby came to his camp and did a concert) and Kam fell in love. Last year for Halloween he went as Toby Keith. He knows EVERY word to all of his songs and thinks he is Toby, so when we heard he was coming to Salt Lake we got tickets. Kam was SO EXCITED...

About an hour before we left, Kam got out his super cool hat (with attached curly mullet) and guitar to give us a little pre-show taste.
Singing his little heart out.

Finally in our seats, waiting for the show to begin. We were a little early so we had to endure a whole hour of Trace Adkins. Nothing like some good old honky tonk badonkadonk. Yuck.
Kam kept asking us who this guy was and where the heck was Toby Keith. It was pretty funny.

Me and my monster

Don't you love the built-in mullet hat? Totally Toby style.

Finally at about 9:30 pm (we got there about 7pm) Toby came out. Kam was beyond excited. This was his first glimpse of him.

Our little fam, minus Krew. My mom came up to keep an eye on the little guy while we were gone.

One of many dance moves he broke out that night.

Kam had a blast and I am glad that we went. It was a LATE night, but totally worth it. I am not a big fan of Toby myself, but I still had a great time with my boys. Really though, who wouldn't have a good time watching a stadium full of drunken hicks?!?!
